Opportunities
We are
currently seeking qualified individuals to work with Douglas J. Besharov,
resident scholar, American Enterprise Institute; professor, University of
Maryland School of Public Affairs; and director, Welfare
Reform Academy. Professor
Besharov's work focuses on poverty issues (including welfare reform, education,
and job training), family policy issues (including child care, teen parents, and
out-of-wedlock births), and children's issues (including child abuse and child

Program
Assistant
Program assistant
will aid projects of the Maryland School of Public Affairs; including the
Norman and Florence Brody Family Foundation public policy forums and the
satellite-broadcast, distance learning programs of the Welfare Reform
Academy.
Responsibilities
include: (1) Organizing conferences, which involves drafting all
correspondence; scheduling and serving as the liaison to speakers;
downlink site solicitation and management for distance learning
programs; and coordinating with outside vendors for studio facilities, camera
direction, crew, and satellite transmission.
(2) Administration of periodic financial and narrative reports to
foundation grantors, which involves drafting correspondence; serving as the
liaison to both the American Enterprise Institute and the University of
Maryland Foundation regarding financial statements; maintaining schedule of
reports due; and drafting budgets for grant proposals. (3) General program administration, which involves supervision of web
pages, mailing list compilation, and event mailings; and financial management
of events.
Requirements:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, experience with various word processing programs. Experience with web site creation and maintenance; budgeting; bookkeeping; and database and spreadsheet programs preferred.
Salary: Commensurate with experience.
Staff
Assistant
Seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented staff assistant to provide general assistance.
Responsibilities include: Administrative duties; research, writing, and
editing; working manuscripts through the final phases of production; and
managing conferences and events.
Requirements: Excellent communications, writing, organizational, and word
processing skills (Word, WordPerfect, and Internet). An ideal candidate enjoys an academic environment and has an interest in
social policy. Familiarity with
presentation/graphics programs a plus.
Salary:
Commensurate with experience.
Internships
Internships in
social policy are available. Interns must commit to at least 10 hours a week, and may work up to 40
hours per week.
Responsibilities
include: Gathering, compiling, and analyzing information about a wide variety
of social service programs, including programs targeting child abuse and
neglect, child care, welfare reform, American families, and teen pregnancy.
Requirements: Good
research and writing skills. Familiarity
with WordPerfect and a background in economics, sociology, or political
science are helpful.
